Minutes of the Project coordinators meeting on August 9th, 2019 (DRAFT 2) 1. Part A. [Item #1] Presentation "Rotational Quantum-Beat Laser" by Dr. Maria Richter (Project 1.1) The presentation by Dr. Richter was followed by a lively discussion. A question was asked from the audience, what are the effects of propagation and rotational excitation? How large is the amplification seen in the calculations? Dr. Richter replied that the magnitude of the amplification has not been quantified yet; the qualitative existence of amplification has been the focus so far. Dr. Rouzée asked whether the technique could be applied to remote sensing, and how would it work for molecules more complex than nitrogen? Such molecules will have a much denser spectrum. Dr. Richter replied that the approach is in principle universal, but system-specific issues should be expected. Dr. Kornilov asked how this technique is related to photon echo? Dr. Richter replied that there are many similarities. Dr. Kornilov further commented that it may be inappropriate to this emission mechanism "lasing", since it appears to be parametric amplification. Prof. Elsaesser asked what are the Rabi frequencies of these processes? Dr. Richter replied that the X-B Rabi cycle time is around 15 fs; the process studied presently is much faster. Dr. Nagy asked what is the gain bandwidth? Dr. Richter replied that the bandwidth depends strongly on the pump parameters. 1. Part B. [Item #2] Minutes approval for the meeting on June 4th, 2019 The minutes were approved with no changes. [Item #3] Other items [Item #3.1] Proposed change to the format of the MBI Day - Prof. Eisebitt It was suggested to eliminate project overview presentations, and instead concentrate on the highlight talks. The project overview will still be available in the poster form. Prof Elsaesser expressed the concern on the absence of the overview talks. Dr. Rouzée remarked that the project overview was presented multiple times this year, as a part of the institute evaluation process. As an exception to the usual MBI Day process, it may be helpful to concentrate on the highlights instead. Dr. Morales commented that highlight talks may be better at maintaining the attention of the audience. This may be a worthy experiment. Dr. Kornilov commented that it is easier to learn about the project structure at the posters, where all information is available. Prof. Elsaesser commented that it may be a good idea to use the strategy posters from the project evaluation. [Item #3.2] Mid-year budget reallocation Dr. Rouzée asked whether there are any news on the budget reallocation? Has is been decided? The directors replied that the reallocation is being currently worked on. The meeting adjourned. Minutes prepared by S. Patchkovskii on November 10th, 2019, with corrections through November 11th, 2019
